Ella Rubeli is a Documentary Film Director, Photographer and Writer based in Australia.
Ella is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker. Before specialising in documentary filmmaking, she worked as a multimedia journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald. The five-time Walkley Award winner, including 2022 Walkley Award for Innovation and 2016 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the year, Ella has directed and produced documentaries and visual journalism projects in Australia and abroad.
Her projects have been showcased at international film festivals including IDFA and SXSW and presented by SBS and ABC Television networks in Australia. Her writing and photography has been published in The Good Weekend Magazine, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian Australia and SBS Online.
Interested in experimenting and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, Ella’s latest work as a producer for SBS Australia, straddles photojournalism, documentary film and interactive storytelling.
Ella has been honoured to collaborate with recognised artists and writers as well as communities and documentary subjects, a storytelling methodology that is an increasingly important part of her practice.
Ella has a bachelor of Journalism/Communications from University of Technology, Sydney and studied a semester at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. In 2014 she completed a Graduate Diploma of Documentary Directing at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).
